Our Current Activities
Presently FOSMA is actively involved in representing the views of the industry, and working along with the administration and the Government on matters relating to
- Merchant Shipping (Recruitment and Placement Services) Rules 2005.
- Maritime Labour Convention (MLC)
- Seafarers Identity Document (SID).
- Shortage of manpower.
- Criminalization of Seafarers.
- Piracy and Hijacking.
- Coastal and Port Security concerns, in view of the November attacks on
Mumbai
- Representation on STCW matters at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
- Education and Training Matters including funding of Government run
institutes
FOSMA also actively participates in:
- Welfare of Floating Staff (via representation on the Maritime Floating Staff Welfare Trust) which includes re-imbursement of medical expenses, convalescence facilities, financial support on compassionate basis for spouses/children/parents of deserving seafarers
- Signing of Collective Bargaining Agreements with the respective Unions.
- Various maritime seminars and conferences.
- National Maritime Day Celebrations
Foreign Principals employing Indian seafarers would contribute US dollars 10 per month per seafarer employed towards the fund to be used for the training activities.
As the International Maritime Legislation changes demanded more and more training for seafarers, the principals desire to play an active and indirect role in running of Fosma’s training initiative. A body known as FOSMA MARITIME INSTITUTE AND RESARCH ORGANISATION was incorporated under the companies Act 19 56 (section 25 company).
